Ranch rule #1: Never rope a Yak!
Ranch rule #2: See Rule #1!

Yukio's Story-- Yaks are impressive animals, and their horns can be intimidating. "Why don't you de-horn them ? " we are often asked.
Yaks use their horns like humans use their arms. Cows click horns with youngsters as a reprimand. I have watched our first herd bull slide a horn under a newborn struggling to stand.
As an immature, bored, and slightly hyper bull, 'Yukio' would use the tip of a horn for popping up the connecting pins in the corral panels. Every other day we would replace the pins in their proper place. Water trough heaters would become unplugged. We would tightly tape the power cords and fence panels with electrical tape, only to find the tape stretched and broken, the heaters unplugged, and the water in the troughs frozen.
“Once you have Yak, you never go back!”

Why Yaks?
In the spring of 2006, we discovered Yaks.
With both of us working 'off the ranch' and a toddler to raise, the hardiness and self-sufficiency touted on-line about yaks intrigued us.
We traveled to Kooskia, Idaho, to the Wykle Yak Ranch. I soon found myself, with my two-year-old balanced on my hip, surrounded by about 50 yaks. We were thoroughly scrutinized by big dark eyes half-hidden by long, dark hair. The ancient 'pet' grandma yak walked up and leaned against me, wanting scratches. I fell in Love!! - Anna
Thank you, Anna, Kelly, and Ellyn, for your stories and introducing me to the 17Yaks. And thanks to the Yaks for sharing your unique personalities and hamming it up for the camera—my new best friends. -David Gallipoli
